Downtown Walking Tour

Lacing the edge of a magnificent harbor, St. Thomas’ capital town of Charlotte Amalie draws adventurers from over the ocean, as it has for more than three centuries. One of the “jewels of the Caribbean,” today St. Thomas’ huge wooden doors lining Main Street are thrown open to showcase the town’s worldly treasures. Yesterday, these same stone warehouses marketed the fortune-making goods which made St. Thomas a premier international trading port in the New World.

The town’s details delight: shaded balconies overhang the streets, walkways thread throughout. Fountains, and even brick ovens appear in leafy corners. Danish names endure (Kongens Gade: King Street; Snegle Gade: Snail Street), and some yellow-bricked streets rise by steps to access historic neighborhoods.

Our downtown walking tour, led by a trained and knowledgeable guide, leads travelers through 400 years of Virgin Islands History- through the Historic buildings, architecture, culture and stories. Sites visited include historic Fort Christian, the Grand Hotel, Fredrick Lutheran Church, the famous 99 Steps, Hotel 1829, the Hamburg-American Steam Ship Headquarters, Alvaro De Lugo Post Office &WPA Murals, and Government House, amongst other locations.
